An Open Letter to Rainbow Churches

Richard Henry

Charles Spurgeon, the prolific and popular English Baptist preacher of the 19th century, stated in his June 6th morning devotional–

If Job, Isaiah, and Paul were obliged to say they were vile, oh, poor sinner, will you be ashamed to join in the same confession? If divine grace does not eradicate all sin from the believer, how do you hope to do that yourself? And if God loves His people while they are yet vile, do you think your vileness will prevent His loving you? Believe on Jesus, you outcast of the world’s society! Jesus calls you, and such as you are. “Not the righteous, no the righteous; sinners, Jesus came to call.” Even now say, “You have died for sinners; I am a sinner, Lord Jesus. Sprinkle Your blood on me.” If you will confess your sin, you will find pardon.

This short statement is gushing with biblical truth, washing over the reader like a river of living water. Spurgeon tells the truth. No lies detected. He gets to the core of Christ: salvation. He makes no bones about how many people will think they are too vile, too wicked, too sinful to come to the Lord in repentance.

Sadly many today have the opposite problem. They do not think they are vile or wicked at all, but rather, justified and righteous all on their own. That’s the lynchpin in our current moment both in the culture and the visible church.

The issue is if you will confess your sin. Too many in the visible church do not do this or even see a need, and when confronted with this notion are immediately offended and cite some red letter bible verse as justification for not doing it, as if Jesus opposes his own words elsewhere or the apostles he commissioned!

This is something that is not only ignored but hated in nearly all rainbow apologist ‘churches,’ especially if anyone attempts to confront your support and promotion of the LGBT ‘community.’

The worst part is that you believe it’s good and godly to let people live however they choose, over and against how the Lord calls them to live. Progressive Christians think themselves higher and more advanced than “fuddy-duddy bible thumpers.” Sadly, you clearly want to align with society to avoid being an outcast.

Thus you sell a cheap flimsy gospel of tolerance and acceptance; which is no gospel at all. In fact it’s a damnable gospel of the more vile kind as it has the appearance of godliness but denies its power. The Apostle Paul would have plenty to say to the American progressive church, especially during June if he were living today. But we can certainly ‘settle’ for what he wrote to the Galatian churches–

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. – Galatians 1:6-9

Does your church fly the rainbow flag? Then you have been deceived. You have deserted him who called you and turned to another gospel– and it is no gospel at all.

True repentance and faith in the living God is the only remedy. You’re selling a styrofoam gospel made to look like the real thing, but under any weight of examination, it melts and fades like the morning dew.

It’s weak.

It’s cheap.

It doesn’t save.

It does not redeem.

It does not make anyone new.

Hear the warnings from Jesus in the book of Revelation. Too many churches have had their lampstand removed and are now awaiting destruction, but those that may still have a glimmer of light in their progressive church: turn to the living water of the real Christ, not not a mere cultural cause, not “He Gets Us,” not a glorified social justice warrior. No, rather the living Lord of Creation, to whom alone belongs immorality and newness of life; heed the Spirit’s words through Paul:

But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:10-11

Many true Christians are confused and angry each June at the churches, like yours, that fly the rainbow flag. But they should rather weep and mourn for you instead, since you walk as enemies of the cross. They must remember in honesty and humility that they too, at one point, were hostile towards the Lord. They were enemies of the Creator, but He had patience with them, and kindness and grace were extended to them.

True Christians plead to the God of the living and the dead for those around them, like you, who are consumed with the fabricated rainbow, preaching a fake gospel to your own demise. Like a wax apple on the dining room table, it will not satisfy you on the day of wrath.

The true Church will endeavor to offer mercy and grace to those perishing around us and pray that you will come unto Christ Jesus the Lord and truly repent and be washed by the blood of the lamb.

Remember, Pride comes before the fall.

Happy June.
